Carolyn Evans established White Mill Creek farm in 2021 with the support of her husband Bruce to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a farmer — or, as she likes to say, farm-her.
Carolyn holds a B.S. in Horticulture and M.S. in Agricultural Education from North Carolina State University. She spent her early career as a landscape designer and her later career as the Horticulture department chair at Blue Ridge Community College.
Carolyn is a lifelong learner who consumes book after book about animals, plants, mycology, insects and other facets of nature. Her favorite book is Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail.
She retired early from teaching in 2021 to pursue farming, a vocation that she felt called to for many years but was not ready to take the risk until her children were grown.
Bruce is a local residential general contractor who grew up working summers on his grandparents' farm, rising at 2 a.m. to get to the farmer's market by opening at 4 a.m.
He began his career as an electrician and went back to school for a business degree in his 30s. After many years working a desk job behind a computer and moonlighting as a carpenter, Bruce longed to get back to working with his hands.
He re-activated his electrical license and attained his general contractor's license. He now runs Evans Residential Electrical & Construction and moonlights as Carolyn's farm hand. His projects have included installing a new barn, an automated watering system, pasture fencing for rotational grazing, managing farm equipment and other projects.
